Students
Take Action Now Darfur, or better known as the S.T.A.N.D. Club at John Cabot University, held
a used book sale during the first week of classes in order to raise funds for
the club.
Rose
Jeremie, the president of
S.T.A.N.D., said that the book sale, “ …was not only beneficial to
S.T.A.N.D. financially, but also was a wonderful way to serve the students’
needs.” Darla Dion sat down with Rose to learn more about the book sale and
what else students can expect from S.T.A.N.D. in the future.
DD: What
is S.T.A.N.D.?
RJ: Students Take Action Now Darfur. It’s part of a larger state
organization that we decided to bring to JCU a year ago in an effort to raise
awareness for not only the genocide plaguing the area, but for the crimes
against humanity, ethnic conflicts, hunger, etc.. Right now we are the only
chapter in Italy.
DD: What
inspired you to start S.T.A.N.D.? Any specific instance?
RJ: I
feel like this school is such a microcosm of life. People get in their routines
and comfort zones and it keeps them from seeing different aspects of life.
Thus, I felt compelled to instill a commitment in others to the injustices of
humanity, and S.T.A.N.D. has been a great place to start.
DD: S.T.A.N.D.
held a used book sale last week, do you think it was a success?
RJ: Oh
yeah, I feel like it was a great success. I’d really like to do it each
semester.
DD: Is
there any left over inventory available for students to purchase?
RJ:
Definitely, some days we get donations, others we don’t. All they’d have to do
is check with me, or another S.T.A.N.D. member and we could still help them
out. We’re going to be asking for more donations at the end of the semester, so
they can be on the look out for that as well.
DD: Are
there any other S.T.A.N.D. sponsored events coming up?
RJ: We’d
really like to get on board with other clubs and collaborate on student service
oriented events. International Night would be great for S.T.A.N.D., just keep
your eyes open for S.T.A.N.D. ads in the future.
DD: If
students are interested in joining S.T.A.N.D. where should they go and when?
RJ: We
usually meet on Fridays at 12:00 in the student lounge at the Guarini campus,
or sometimes in G.K.G.1.
DD: Is
there anything that you ask of those who wish to participate?
RJ: Commitment.
It’s the basis of what S.T.A.N.D. is trying to accomplish in its accreditation
as a school fighting against world hunger, for example. You don’t need to
commit every second of your life, just show that you are there to try and care.
DD: Is
there anything else you’d like to speak on regarding S.T.A.N.D. or the book
sale?
RJ: I
just hope that students realize the power that they hold in terms of being
active and getting things done. One small action ushers in a huge difference.
