ROME, April 10 - John Cabot University’s soccer team, the Gladiators, played to a 3-3 tie in a playoff match Monday night against Campus Bio Medico, a game that ended in complete confusion.
With the tie, there was only one rather large problem: there was no shoot-out in order to declare a winner. Following the final whistle, a debate ensued on how to settle the tie-breaker when the players from the opposing team walked off the field. Campus Bio Medico believed it is allowed to move on to the finals because of its higher ranking.
As of press time, there was no official ruling, leaving the season in doubt.
Still, the Gladiators have confidence that they will be moving on to the finals. “I think that the rules will be in our favor,” said defense/midfielder Alessandro Lanuto. “From what I heard from the team, we have a good chance in moving on into the final play-offs,” said Paolo Gariboldi.
Despite the uncertainty of Monday's match, the team
definitely feels they have come together as a strong team, which
gave them a come-from-behind tie.
With Gladiator supporters cheering
on from the bleachers, the Gladiators came back
in the second half from an early deficit, getting goals from Robert Ahearn, Paolo Gariboldi
and Simone Capello.
The Gladiators and the student supporters are hoping for the best, and hoping that they do get the opportunity to play.
