ROME, March 19— John Cabot University's Aula Magna auditorium took a step back into ancient history last night with gladiators and togas filling the room.
JCU's student government
sponsors an international night each semester for its students.
This
semester’s theme was Ancient Rome and entrance options were to either
pay 4 euros, or dress in a toga. Many guests came fully dressed for the
occasion gave the room more of an Ancient Roman look.
Guests were offered dinner
consisting of Ancient Roman specialties and classic Italian cuisine.
During dinner, guest gladiators entertained the audience, while dramatic
music from the Academy Award winning film, The Gladiator.
The gladiators got the audience involved by calling up volunteers to show off and explain the use of traditional swords and helmets. After this, the student volunteers, who continued to grow in number, decided it was about time to start the battles. The students stood in a circle on the Aula Magna stage and battled against each other.
Although international night
has been going on for years at JCU, last semester was the first
time that student government decided to make the even into a fund-raiser.
The theme was Asian night and it was a huge hit. The event was a food
drive, and students could either pay money or bring canned food. Student
government used the money to buy more canned food,
and the food was then taken to Sant’Edigio, a large charity here in Rome.
The money made from last night’s event will go to a Haitian charity project. Francesca R. Gleason, coordinator of the Academic Success Program, has been in communication with a nun working in Haiti with whom JCU is creating a program for charity. Money given in the donation box was also used as a raffle later on in the evening.
Although this semester’s international night was not quite as large a turnout as last semester’s, it was still quite a success. The student government did raise money for the charity and guests enjoyed gladiators in action in Ancient Rome.
