This past weekend, The Matthew Online correspondent Jamila Gulec traveled to the heart of A.C. Milan country at a difficult time. The club's high-priced striker Ronaldo went down with an injury. Could this be the end of the football great's career? A.C. Milan fans let us know.
Feb. 13 was a tough day for A.C. Milan when
31-year-old Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima, or "Ronaldo" for short, ruptured a knee tendon, in a game against Serie A rival Livorno.
Surprisingly, fans are not too sorry to see him go.
The
Brazilian striker Ronaldo was transferred to the A.C.
Milan team in January 2007 from Real Madrid for a hefty sum of $11.4 million.
Although
throughout the years Ronaldo had multiple injuries towards his left
knee, this injury that recently occurred seemed to be his worst yet.
Fans wonder if this could end his career.
Not everbody is sad about that prospect.
“To
say the truth, I am happy that Ronaldo is not able to play for a while,” says 25-year-old Gerd Ajdo, a "huge fan" of A.C. Milan. “Maybe
now they will find a new, better striker than Ronaldo”. Ajdo believes Ronaldo has reached his final days as an
A.C. Milan team member.
The question on the streets of Milan is simple: will he retire or play for another team? “It is a very sad situation for Ronaldo,” says 23-year-old Michele Piana.“ He was a great player, but now that story is in the past, and the team can move on without him, or at least until he is strong enough to come back”.
Others, like 15-year-old Federico Marangoni, believe Ronaldo will return to A.C. Milan, and will continue playing for them. Marangoni does not like Ronaldo, he adds. “I would prefer that he does not come back at all," he says, before adding, “but within a few months I am certain that he is going to be back on our team because there is no other team that will take him.”
And what about his teammates? "The players are a little old,” said 23-year-old Milanese fashion director, and A.C. Milan fan Michele Piana. “It is time that they are changed and new players are found”.
