ROME, Feb. 26 - After the $750 million box office success of last year's The Da Vinci Code, millions of fans have been breathlessly awaiting another encounter with Professor Robert Langdon to follow him once again in his adventures. The wait is almost over as shooting of the latest big screen adaptation for Dan Brown thriller Angels & Demons begins this spring in the Eternal City's famed Cinecittà studios.
As Da
Vinci Code fans recall, the American professor Langdon (played by Tom Hanks), helped by cryptologist
Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), followed clues around Paris -- while being chased themselves -- in their quest to solve a murder and unlock a controversial secret about the Catholic Church: that Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene bore a child.
The novel was
a world-wide best-seller and the movie, filmed in Paris and Britain, was one of the highest grossing of all times. Now, the producers hope to strike gold as well with Brown's other best-seller, Angels & Demons, this time filmed across town from the Vatican.
In Angels & Demons, Langdon works to solve a murder and to prevent a terrorist act against the Vatican. For this reason, the producers have decided to locate the shooting of Angels & Demons in the studios of Cinecittà.
It will start in the spring with the same production crew and director Ron Howard at the helm. Chances are strong that Hanks would once again play Langdon.
As for John Cabot students, there could be an opportunity for "extras", but the big roles are already taken.
“The cast will be American,” Francesco Carducci, CEO of Cinecittà Holdings, told The Matthew Online.
