Recruitment begins for JCU student ambassadors
ROME,
Nov. 7 – At back-to-back sessions this week, John Cabot University student ambassadors were trained in the basics of customer care
skills in preparation for the next student orientation period.
More than 15 students and Student Services staff members attended a Tuesday afternoon meeting in JCU's Maximus room where they heard what it takes to be a student ambassador.
Student ambassadors are among the first people new students will meet when they walk on campus. “The first impression is crucial,” said JCU Student Recruiting Officer for Europe and Italy, Mali Cecere.
To be a student ambassador requires a number of skills. It is fundamental to be positive, sympathetic and communicative to deal properly with an international student body. One must also be committed, flexible and participate as a team member, Cecere said.
Tuesday's meeting was not a formal lecture, but rather an exchange of ideas and observations. Cecere asked students reflect on these experiences to be better prepared for the role.
Cecere has much experience in customer care. She was a flight attendant for the now defunct European airline, Virgin Express, before becoming the JCU Recruiting Officer for the region. She gave students a lot of first-hand experience as well as practical tips to deal with pressure, complaints, and unknown situations.
“Student ambassadors can make the difference in a student's first impact with the academic world,” Cecere reminded students.
Ottavia Criss, a JCU sophomore, said student ambassadors have a great responsibility even beyond the Orientation week; they are seen as a reference point.
“A
committed student ambassador,” said Chriss, “is so throughout
the whole academic year.”
