DJ Jazzy Jeff rocks Rome's Piper Club
By Vanessa Dones
ROME, April 25 - The walls of
the historic Piper Club, located in the heart
of Rome, came alive with
the beats of hip-hop pioneer, DJ Jazzy Jeff last Wednesday night. Jazzy,
along with the rest of his entourage of friends and fellow DJs kept
the crowd swaying well into the early morning.
The DJ Jazzy Jeff showcase has been a long awaited event for Rome’s party crowd, organized by a promoter well known to JCU students, Alfredo Martinez. DJ Jazzy Jeff, also known as Jeffery Townes, is most famous for being apart of the 1980s duo DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Together, he and friend Will Smith took home a Grammy for their hit, "Parents Just Don’t Understand". Later, Townes acted along side Smith in his sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
The April 18 show began promptly at
11 p.m., and the night started off with one of Jeff’s fellow DJ’s opening
the set. About twenty minutes later, MC “Yah-Mean”, announced the
entrance of the whiz kid DJ. Jeff spun flawlessly, mixing today’s
hottest hip-hop with some older beats that everyone seemed to know by heart. Girls and guys smiled and screamed as Jeff played their favorite
new tune or threw on a song that reminded them of some far off memory
of dance floors past.
“It was a great set. He played some of my favorite
music. I can’t believe it’s really him. I watched him on the Fresh
Prince of Bel-Air for years, and here he is in Rome!,” exclaimed JCU
student and hip-hop enthusiast Angela Imbriano. “It was a great night,
I haven’t danced that much in a long time.”
The night ran smoothly,
with only one incident, in which an American club-goer was assaulted by a bouncer while trying to pass through the velvet ropes
of the VIP area.
Piper Club has long been the
place to be for the best music, people-watching and a guaranteed good
time. Opened in 1965, it has been a celebrity hang-out for names like
the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Van Morrison.
Located almost one hundred
and fifty feet below sidewalk level, Piper Club’s loud music and beautiful
crowd are the principle attractions. The VIP area located on the
stage, which rises slightly above the dance floor, is the place to be
for those exhibitionists that want to show off their moves.
For JCU students in the audience, the April 18 show was a big deal.
DJ
Jazzy Jeff or “Jazz” as he was known on Will Smith’s iconic sitcom,
has been a staple in American homes for decades. Jeff’s new album, The Return of the Magnificent ,
drops on May 8th!
